Donald Trump, in his typical fashion, has been loudly suggesting that he might seek the Republican nomination for president. Part of his thundering involved making the debatable claim that Ron Paul is unelectable (leaving aside the fact that a divorced, repeatedly bankrupt, womanizing casino flipper probably will not win a lot of votes in mainstream America).
Despite his faults though, Trump would be the ideal Republican candidate- he symbolizes everything the party has morphed into of late.
Recklessly big spender? Check.
Advocate for large, centrally planned programs? Check.
Forein policy highly interventionist? Check.
Proponent of Keynesian spending? Check.
Aside from a few quasi-libertarian tendencies (he is apparently in favor of gay marriage because he feels gay people have the "right" to marry, not that the government lacks the "right" to preclude them), Trump is Mitt Romney with a New York accent and less successful business record.
Trump is an entertainer more than anything else, and in that sense would make a suitable candidate. Because the GOP as it presently exists is more amusing than inspiring.
