Jeffrey Tucker from the von Mises Institute has written a superb review of Obama's recent declaration that America is better off because of recent government regulations encouraging the development of the auto-defrosting freezer. The article can be found and enjoyed here.
While Obama's claim is disturbing in the sense it was poorly research, and yet calculated (the target audience of the "now you don't have to defrost freezers like your grandmother did" statement is clearly the valuable soccer mom crowd), there is another objection. Why in the world would voters want to hear that government thinks it can stimulate innovation, let alone through regulation? The President's public endorsement of this idea underlines a sincere philosophical difference between what he believes the country should be and what the country is under our Constitution. It is as if he were to say "I know America was not founded as a socialistic enterprise, but I think we should have a national healthcare plan which requires all persons to participate in that plan."
Oh wait....
